What It’s Like to Leave the UK: Thoughts Before the Move

Have you ever felt like you were stuck in a rut? That’s exactly how I’ve felt over the past few years. Work became repetitive, and coming home to a flat where my flatmate struggled with basic cleaning made things even more draining. I’d spend my days tired from work, only to have to clean up after someone else. When the opportunity to move to Australia came along, it felt like the perfect chance to start fresh and leave that cycle behind.

A Mix of Emotions

Right now, I’m super excited about the move—I can’t wait! With Christmas and my birthday around the corner, it’s been nice to spend time with family and friends before I go. But between finishing up at work and moving furniture into storage, I’ve been so busy that the excitement hasn’t fully hit me yet. A few days ago, though, it really sunk in when I said out loud, “I’m leaving next week.”

What I’ll Miss

Of course, there are things I’ll miss. My family, friends, and the town where I grew up hold a special place in my heart. One of my priorities before leaving has been saving enough money to ensure I can afford a journey back home if I need to come back at short notice. Still, I’m looking forward to trading the cold, wet UK weather for Brisbane’s sunshine.

Preparing for the Big Move

Over the past six months, I’ve been working overtime and saving as much money as possible. I’ve also taken the time to meet up with friends and family to say my goodbyes. We’ve had some memorable send-off drinks, which has made leaving a little bittersweet but also filled with love and support.

Packing, on the other hand, has been a challenge. With limited storage and a completely different climate to prepare for, I’ve been unsure what to take. It’s a mix of excitement and logistical headaches.

My Biggest Fear

While I’m optimistic about the move, I do have my fears. My biggest concern is not meeting the expectations I’ve set for myself—whether it’s finding the right job or settling into a completely new environment. But I’m determined to make it work and remind myself that growth often comes from stepping out of your comfort zone.

Support from Loved Ones

Thankfully, my family and friends have been incredibly supportive of my decision. I know my parents will miss me, and I’ll miss them too, but they’ve encouraged me to follow my dreams and find happiness. That support has made the decision to leave a little easier.

Goals for a Fresh Start

Living in such a small town, I’ve often felt like my goals didn’t align with those around me. Moving to Australia is my chance to focus on what’s truly important to me:

  • Building independence and becoming comfortable in a new city.
  • Developing healthy daily habits like regular exercise, eating whole foods, and getting enough sleep.
  • Working toward personal and professional goals.

I also hope that being on my own will help me lock in on these priorities and make the most of my time.

Sharing My Journey

One of my passions is documenting experiences, and this move is no exception. Through this blog and my Instagram, I plan to share everything—from the process of moving and settling in to tips and reviews of things I find useful along the way. I hope this will not only help others considering a similar move but also allow me to reflect on my own journey.

Looking Ahead

As I prepare to leave, I’m filled with a mix of excitement and nerves. It’s not just about leaving the UK; it’s about embracing a new chapter, stepping out of my comfort zone, and pursuing a life that aligns with my dreams.

If you’ve ever considered making a big move yourself, I hope my journey inspires you to take that leap. It’s never easy, but sometimes the hardest decisions lead to the most rewarding experiences. Stay tuned for more updates as I embark on this life-changing adventure!
